Helping local communities and international interdisciplinary artists come together to create life and art on the island of Rodrigues, one of the most remote inhabited islands,
600 km from Mauritius in the southwestern Indian Ocean.
We love to invite you to co-create simple meals, an open kitchen filled with fundamental creative energy and heartful sharing.
Kitchen is a place where the basic energy of life is created and where the power is created to share life with others. A simple meal makes life move, a creative meal makes life dance, and a shared meal makes life sing together.
We want to open an open kitchen of local and international art, natural life and cultural exchanges in Rodrigues, a remote island still alive with simple life and pure nature everywhere.
Who are we?
We are the <INTERNATIONAL ART RESIDENCE AND EXHIBITION IN RODRIGUES, MAURITIUS> project team, with over 25 local and international artists participating. This project will be held for a month from April 1 to 30, 2024 and artists will breathe fresh air of interdisciplinary art throughout the island. The artists are from South Korea, Poland, Lithuania, Chile, Germany, Spain, Japan, USA, France, Iceland, Seychelles, Slovakia, Nepal, La Renuion, Canada and Mauritius. We will make our works in situ, in sheds and all sorts of spaces around the island, seeking inspiration in the local community, history and nature.
We have already organized four international art projects in Mauritius represented by the 2022/23 exhibition “Island Myths and Reality” at National History Museum Mauritius, Mahébourg and now a fifth is about to happen in the smaller and more remote Rodrigues.
A place where time seems to have stopped at some point and where pure nature is preserved, a place without stimulating pleasures like everyday cities or famous tourist destinations, and a place without big museums or art galleries.
What do international artists want to do from this place?
“ESCALE - The Transit of Venus Across the Sun” 2024 in Rodrigues
The 2024 project is titled "ESCALE - The Transit of Venus Across the Sun".
We think it is similar to the pioneering adventure that took place in 1761 when astronomically inclined scientists rushed to the remote island of Rodrigues to measure the exact distance from Earth to the sun. So now 2024, an international arts adventure in Rodrigues is emerging. The artists from all over the world are ready to fly to this island for the 2024 International Art Adventure.
We are international art explorers who join local artists to turn the entire island of Rodrígues into arts workshop space for four weeks. The results of the works of the residence will be presented to the public through exhibition and concert.
All works are created on site, inspired by the island's environment, culture and daily life. The idea is to allow the work to develop through field experiences and the interactions and exchanges that occur between the artists and the communities.
All participants are encouraged to express themselves in the genre that inspires them: drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, video, installation, happening, performance, etc.
Multinational arts that listen to the local and resonate with it International art explorers will listen carefully and resonate with the locals with all the senses at the intersection of art and cultural anthropology, create works, and permanently display some new works of art on the island. We will permeate into the local culture, experience and interact with it, and produce unique results created from diverse cultural perspectives based on respect for the local culture.
All art explorers will bring a creative wind to local art education by facilitating workshops and events to share their artistic language with the community.
The experiences provided by the pure natural environment, way of life, and food will also be produced as cultural and artistic works, which participating artists will deliver to all over the world. The workshops and exchanges held throughout the island for a month will be produced as art documentaries and online content, and the language of culture and art from the small island will spread throughout the world.
The necessity of creating OPEN KITCHEN
We are meeting with local governments, arts culture-related organizations, and local people to communicate our purpose and gather warm support and encouragement. The international artists will be staying in a place in Rodrigues, but there are poor kitchen facilities.
Participating artists fly voluntarily from all over the world, purchasing airline tickets with their own money and without any compensation. Accordingly, we started this fund to maximize their exploration of local and international arts by providing artists with the simplest form of accommodation and food.
The open kitchen will be an open community space where artists from all over the world cook their own food to manage their daily energy and invite local residents to share art and food together. All dishes here will be created using the most local ingredients, making it a space for local creative food art.
Proceeds from this funding will be used to provide minimal equipment for an open kitchen and to cover material and food costs for the one-month project. All materials will be used in exchange with local fishermen and farmers, helping the local economy. The activities and exchanges of the open kitchen will be recorded in video and arts language, allowing people to experience the value of the site online and join together across distances. Various performances and exhibitions taking place around this space will also be viewed online, and will be screened and exhibited in Europe and Asia in the future.
Have you ever experienced and do you remember a table where you can enjoy simple, warm food and freely, deeply communicate life and art with neighbors, friends, and even strangers? We hope to create simple tables for such an artistic community in the remote island. This will be a small but very rich experimental space where local and global, food and art come together.
We are waiting for some small contribution to make creative tables where food, life, and art are shared, and beautiful tables where the simplest and most diverse languages are truly communicated. We hope that many people around the world will participate in this open kitchen project in various ways, little by little, for the price of a simple meal. This open kitchen experience in Rodrigues will be the starting point for opening other art resonance kitchens around the world.
